Transatlantic Topographies studies the representation of American space during the initial confrontation between Europeans and Amerindians and during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries.

Starting from topographical descriptions of land, islands, highlands, and jungles, Ileana Rodríguez shows how existing systems of knowledge broke down with the discovery of the Americas and had to be reinvented through the interpr! etation of signs, the accumulation of evidence, material exchange, and, finally, through the learning, teaching, and "kidnapping" of language. Proceeding from the period of exploration to the modern creation of a "twentieth-century frontier," Rodríguez charts the path that led from island paradise to jungle chaos, from representations of natural beauty to the racialization of the islands.

Drawing attention to cross-cultural miscommunication and the riddles of meaning and message it produces, Transatlantic Topographies develops a highly nuanced understanding of the evolving forces of imperialism as they gave way to postcolonialism and then to transnationalismâ€"and newly reinscribed notions of imperial economic practices.

Ileana Rodríguez is humanities distinguished professor in Spanish literatures and cultures at Ohio State University. Her books include Women, Guerillas, and Love: Understanding War in Central America (Minnesota, 1996).I wrote this book becaus! e, sadly, I see the United States turning more and more toward! s commun ism. As misinformed Americans embrace eagerly the total socialist society concept, the nanny state, I hear the “echo” of my hard communist life in Romania and the cries for freedom.
All the stories of becoming an American citizen, the pride, the pain, the hard work, experiencing good and bad along the way while weaving myself into the fabric of society, being an American longer than I was a Romanian, where I came from, why, and how, had to be told.
The vignettes are a small glimpse into the universe of a child and a young woman growing up under communism and the pained, tumultuous transition of a young adult to life in a free, capitalist American society.
The painful adaptation to a foreign culture, the rejection by my new family, the abandonment with two small children in a foreign land, the clash of cultures stemming from either ignorance, language barriers, or fear of the unknown were daunting.
Understanding that being different is just that, dif! ferent, and making others embrace the concept was interesting and frustrating. Not belonging to an entrenched culture and its traditions and dealing with rejection posed many dilemmas.
It was important to explain in simple prose, matter of fact, what communism was like. Living under communism was not the romanticized version promoted by Hollywood on celluloid or on chic merchandise; it was not wearing the “cool” Che Guevara t-shirt of the murderer and butcher of thousands and thousands of innocents. Celebrities use their platforms and microphones to promote communism and bash the capitalist society that allowed them to become famous and rich in the first place. They have no clue what it is like to live every day under communism.
Communism was re-education camps; it was poverty, misery, unfairness, proletariat and the ruling elite, death by medical neglect of the socialized medical system, shortages of everything, especially food and medicine, poor housing, no! freedom of speech, religion, travel, assembly, or movement. C! ommunism was the death of the human spirit. Communism was the premature death of my father and many others like him who happened to be in the crosshairs of communist elite interests of totalitarian control.

The life of a princess isn't all glamor, handsome princes, and beautiful clothes. It's also devotion to duty, sacrifice for your people, and a lot of just plain hard work. And if your country happens to suffer two world wars and a communist takeover in your lifetime, it means danger and suffering, exile and heartache. Princess Ileana of Romania endured all this and more. But her deeply rooted Orthodox faith saw her through it all, and eventually led her in her later years to the pea! ceful repose of monasticism. But that life included sacrifice and hard work as well, because as Mother Alexandra she was called to build the first English-language Orthodox women s monastery in the United States the Monastery of the Transfiguration in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. Princess Ileana's story is a thrilling tale of love and loss, danger and rescue, sacrifice and reward. Her inspiring life stands as a beacon of faith and holiness for young women of all times and nations to follow.Ileana's Butterfly Ring - Art Deco Fleur de Lis encompasses several trends in one! It's dainty enough to wear daily, and it works well as a right hand ring. We love the fleur de lis shape, with extended sides that form a butterfly outline. Pave set CZs bring light to the forefront while four small, round cut CZs on either side of the band complete the design. This Art Deco butterfly ring is a must have.
